On Jack's command they came screaming out of the underbrush, Jim Tom in the lead. Within moments, they had the unlucky Union soldiers and skinners surrounded before they could get off more than a few startled and completely ineffective shots.

"Or scalp us," came a weak cry behind the first soldier.
"We intend to spare your lives, if you obey," Jack yelled. "Throw down your arms and get upon your knees. Where is your commanding officer?"
"I am here, sir, and we surrender," said a shaky-voiced young officer, who saw Jim Tom for the first time as he approached. "Oh sweet Jesus, you are Captain War Bonnet, sir. I have read of you. My compliments, sir."
The young officer's voice was gaining some strength, and he finally tore his gaze from Jim Tom to Jack. "We have been told that your general has issued orders that all Negro troops and their white officers are to be shown no quarter," he said flatly.
